What it is:

  • Data about THE data

  • It can be descriptive, structural or administrative

  • It may apply to an item or a collection of items

  • Some are embedded, while some are linked

  • Audience also defines metadata to be classified as human-readable vs machine-readable

  • Most importantly, it can be described in a way that can be controlled or uncontrolled
